The aim of replica testing is to obtain a metallographic image of the material directly on the component examined. Research conducted regularly with replica testing in the function of operational time allows to describe the condition of the material and identify potential changes in its structure caused by load or work environment.
One of the advantages of the replica method is its non-destructive character. Both grinding as well as subsequent polishing and etching lead to the removal of an ommitably thin layer of material (about 0.5 mm) from a tiny area which does not lower the resistance of the component examined. Compared to standard metallographic tests, the replica method also has its limitation - the possibility to test the superficial layer only which may not be representative of the material s total volume (thickness). The results of replica testing are worth correlating with tests on sections of samples prepared of the same cast and subjected to the same heat and mechanical treatment as the component examined.
