BIOMATERIAL is any material that is used to replace or restore function to a body tissue and is continuously or intermittently in contact with body fluids and it excludes materials used for devices such as surgical or dental instruments. The science of biomedical materials involves a study of the composition and properties of materials and the way in which they interact with the bio- environment in which they are placed. The selection of biomaterial for a specific application is governed by matching the material properties (mechanical, chemical, physical and biological) with the requirements of this application. Some concepts such as foreign body reaction, biocompatibility, and bioactivity have been generally introduced as requirements for biomaterials in the design of implants. Biocompatibility: acceptance of an artificial implant material by the surrounding tissues, the implant should be compatible with tissue in terms of mechanical, chemical, surface, and structure properties. Artificial biomaterials can be classified into three categories according to the nature of their interaction with the surrounding environments; a- bio-inert material : it is nontoxic and biologically inactive (nearly inert), a fibrous tissue of variable thickness forms; b- bioactive material : it is nontoxic and biologically active (bioactive), an interfacial bond forms; c- biodegradable or bioresorbable material :it is nontoxic and dissolves, the surrounding tissue replaces it.
