Academic English and Research Skills: An introduction

This academic English course is designed to 1st class students at the Faculty of Materials Engineering. It covers the principals of academic speaking, writing, listening and reading. It is delivered by the lecturer Mohanad K. I. Mamoori ( an academic English certificate from ELTC University of Sheffield, UK.

Academic writing: >>>

Importance of writing as a communication skill.
No exaggeration.
Impersonal (no use of “I am”)
Always allow for arguing

Writing >>> 2D communication in flat page, Our words on the page are silent, so we must use punctuation and word choice to communicate our tone.

Speaking >>> 3D communication.

Novice writers >>> often write as if they were mumbling to themselves in the corner with no sense that their writing will be read by a reader or any sense of the context within which their communication will be received.

Developing your “writer’s sense” about communicating within the writing situation is the most important thing you should learn in freshman composition.
